The protagonist, Reth, was responsible for a horrible accident. He has just confessed this to his best friend, Valak. Valak has been travelling with Reth to help him avenge their friend's death.

INT. SPACESHIP ENGINE ROOM - NIGHT

VALAK
(shock, disbelief)
You… You caused the cave in...

Reth says nothing. He looks down in shame. Valak grabs him roughly.

VALAK
What the fuck did you do?!

Reth looks at Valak, finally the mask of rage has dropped. He looks like a scared boy.

RETH
Valak, I'm sorry.

Valak hits him once, goes to do it again. Then lets him go and turns away.

RETH
I was doing a job Val! It wasn’t my idea to blow up the tunnel! You have to believe me!

VALAK
Your job?! Do you know what my job on Cantera was Reth? Pulling dead people out of piles of rock.

RETH
Val…

VALAK
Most were already gone when we found them. But the ones who were still breathing are the ones I can't get out of my head. People whose hands I was holding while their organs gave out!

Reth is silent. Upset.

VALAK
I got dishonourably discharged for refusing the order to leave. I stayed behind to help as long as I could… And it was you…

Reth realises that’s why Valak was dishonourably discharged.

VALAK
I’ve risked my life for you, to honour Teo! And this whole time. You were the one who…

RETH
Valak you can’t know how sorry I am about Cantera. If I could go back I would. But it was an accident. I didn’t mean to kill anyone I swear. I didn’t set the explosives in the mine, I just pressed the button. And I never would if I had known, you have to believe that.

Valak is thinking, he looks at Reth.

VALAK
We find Tygan, we kill him. I’ll do it for Teo. But after that, you and I are done.

Valak walks out. Reth punches the hull of the ship leaving a stain of his and Valak's blood.
